“Dan Marschak was keeper of melody with personable authority” Karl Stober, Critic: Jazz Review.com
“Dan Marschak is a wonderful up-and-coming pianist, composer, and arranger. He is one of those artists that has it all: Brilliant musicianship, inspired writing, and a great personality. I expect great things from him!” – Josh Nelson Pianist, Composer, Recording Artist
“I've been lucky enough to have made the acquaintance of Dan Marschak. For some years, he's been the accompanist for the vocal class I teach at UCLA; and, perhaps more important, Dan has performed at my venue, The Jazz Bakery, on numerous occasions. He is a wonderfully inventive pianist and composer with, I'm certain, a bright future!” - Ruth Price, President & Artistic Director, The Jazz Bakery & UCLA Professor
At 23, Dan Marschak maintains an active schedule as a pianist, composer, arranger, teacher, and recording artist. A native of the Bay Area, he currently resides in Los Angeles, and has performed with some of the most respected names in music, including Kalil Wilson, Dr. Bobby Rodriguez, Abrose Akinmusare, The Elliot Deutsch Big Band, Hitomi Oba, Kahlil Shaheed, Danielle Gaha, Dwight Trible, and the UCLA Contemporary Large Ensemble (under the direction of Kenny Burrell and James Newton). Dan’s musical aspirations led him to study composition as well as piano, and in 2009, he completed B.A.’s in both Ethnomusicology (Jazz Studies) and Music Composition at UCLA’s Herb Alpert School of Music.
Dan has studied piano with Bay Area legends Susan Muscarella and Mark Levine and Los Angeles greats Tom Rainier, Tamir Hendelman, and Josh Nelson. As a UCLA music student, he had the pleasure of studying with jazz icons Kenny Burrell, James Newton, Gerald Wilson, Anthony Wilson, and George Bohanon. He has performed at premier California venues, including Yoshi’s, The UCLA Jazz/Reggae Festival, The Jazzschool, Café Metropol, Red White + Bluezz, Catalina’s Bar and Grill, the Jazz Bakery, the House of Blues, Jupiter, and the Knitting Factory.
As a composer, Dan has been fortunate to have mentors who are masters and terrific teachers. Professors Paul Chihara, Ian Krouse, Mark Carlson, and Roger Bourland have played major roles in his development. Dan has written, orchestrated, and arranged pieces for vocalist Kalil Wilson, UCLA Contemporary Large Ensemble, UCLA Philharmonia (directed Neal Stulberg), UCLA Wind Ensemble (directed by Tom Lee), the UCLA Chorale (directed by Donald Neuen), and smaller ensembles of varying instrumentation. He has also composed scores for student films and videogames, and remains active as a freelance composer. Dan strives to implement what he knows about jazz into a classical tradition to create a distinctive style. He is available for commissions, teaching, and playing opportunities throughout the Southern California area.
