I was born into a musical family and began playing the trumpet at the age 6. Having achieved Grade 8 by the age of 14, I went on to study in London at the Royal College of Music Junior Department for two years and then Trinity College of Music for a further three years. I have an extensive knowledge of music theory and am a strong reader and improviser of music. Since leaving music college in 1988 I have worked as a professional freelance trumpet player, performing a diverse range of music including classical, jazz, salsa, pop, blues, funk, mariachi and other World music. Performance credits include:
Frank Sinatra
Shirley Bassey
Neil Diamond
Jamie Cullum
The Temptations
The Drifters
Pendulum Jazz Orchestra backing international jazz artists including Kenny Wheeler; Gerard Prescencer; Stan Sulzman and Ben Castle.
I began composing and arranging music in 1992. Original compositions include works for my own jazz quintet, the eleven piece jazz ensemble EPJ and the Pendulum Jazz Orchestra. Arranging work includes music for big bands, dance schools, brass ensembles, educational productions and jazz quartets.
In February 2002 I completed the Music for the Media course (organised by Guy Michelmore of Atlantic Studios in London) which focused on composing and producing music for adverts, documentaries and drama programmes (synchronising the music to time code). The course has provided me with an excellent understanding of the processes involved in writing to picture or a specific brief and has also fine tuned my compositional and arranging skills. Since finishing the course I have composed and recorded the music for eleven short films and animations and completed numerous arrangements for live 10-piece and big band ensembles. I also have tracks logged with library music companies, including Stockmusic.net and Soundscape Media (Canada), Pump Audio and Transition Music (America) and Media Music Now (UK).
In July 2006 I made composition and arranging my full-time occupation. Now based in West Yorkshire, my current studio is based around a custom built PC running a host of professional sample sets and plug-ins including the East West Gold XP Pro Symphonic Orchestra, the full Project Sam Brass collection, the Miroslav Vitous Philharmonik orchestral plug-in and the virtual instruments Atmosphere and RMX Stylus.
I am comfortable composing in many styles but I particularly enjoy creating orchestral (including choral) and jazz scores, as well as abstract soundscapes. Where possible, I always try to make sure that what I write could actually be played by real musicians, if the circumstances and budget allowed, which helps to make a sample based orchestra or big band sound more realistic and authentic.
As a self-employed musician and composer I am used to motivating and organising himself, managing workloads to ensure deadlines are met. I am an experienced composer, who would relish the opportunity to work with you on your film. You can listen to a small selection of my work at www.doriankelly.com (click on the Examples tab). If you do not hear what you are looking for on my web site, please let me know and I will send further examples and / or compose a specific demo.
