With over 25 years of performing, writing, producing, and teaching experience, Kurt Dovenbarger continues to evolve as a performer, singer, and song writer.
From his rock roots as lead guitarist and vocalist for local Milwaukee bands Three James Morgan and Tunnel Project, to his soon to be released album Kurt Dovenbarger – All the World, Dovenbarger has always appreciated music from a “purist’s” standpoint.
“Song writing has always been a great love for me. But at the same time it’s been an extreme source of frustration. I’ve always tried to come up with something different – something that people haven’t heard before. If during the song writing process a certain passage or riff sounds similar to something that’s been done before……I immediately consider axing it!”.
A University of Milwaukee graduate with a degree in Music, Dovenbarger feels that his education has been a blessing as well as a curse.
“My education taught me the fundamentals of music theory and provided me with a great base to work with. However, in my early years I believed that a song had to be complicated in order to be well written. Over the years, I’ve discovered that sometimes simple is better – it’s really heart and passion that makes a great song. A technical education, while definitely worthwhile, can sometimes hamper the creative mind”.
Dovenbarger lives in Central Wisconsin with his wife Nancy and their most recent addition to the family – their son Kade. He performs and teaches primarily in the Central Wisconsin area.
“I try to teach my students basically the same way I was taught. Music is a combination of both physical skills and theory. Hopefully, I can also give them sound advice from some of my performing and song writing experiences”.
