Over the past year, just for example, I've done: a sad and intimate piece using violin and cello; a piano piece that (deliberately) sounded like it was played by a drunk in an old saloon; a guitar-driven, rockabilly number "roughed-up" to sound convincingly "vintage"; a quiet "capote-esque" underscore with gentle piano and soft strings, dark and angry music with horns, strings and harpsichord, nostalgic Nick Drake-ish stuff without the voice, "traditional-ish" Asian folk music, as well as ambient and electronic.

In a Documentary: To provide continuity to a montage and smooth transitions.
In a Drama: Emmotive underscore to convey or embellish a character's inner experience. e.g. receiving bad news on the phone or the moment of a pivotal decision that resolves or transforms the story.
In Horror/Suspense: Creating a disturbing atmosphere or one of extreme tension. Also, I can write music that suggests information to the audience that a character might not be privy to, or only suspect.
