Film Music Opportunities
Juan Chattah currently teaches Music Theory and Composition at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, GA. He holds a M.M. and a Ph.D. from Florida State University, a B.M. in Piano Performance from the Utrecht Conservatorium (The Netherlands), and a Certificate of Music from the Conservatorio de Musica in Cordoba (Argentina). He recently attended workshops on Tango music composition (CMS Institute in Buenos Aires), film music orchestration (Film Music Institute, Steven Scott Smalley), and the NYU/ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop.

During his graduate studies at Florida State University, he composed scores for numerous short films produced by Film School graduates and mixed by Academy Award Winner Richard Portman. His music for the radio drama series “Stories in the Air” was broadcast internationally through PRI (Public Radio International). In 2007 he was a semi-finalist of the Young Film Composers Competition (Turner Classic Movies). Recent music includes “Music for Signs” performed at the Equinox Concert in the Planetarium at Agnes Scott College.

Juan’s primary research interest concerns the application of models drawn from linguistics and critical theory to the analysis of film music. His dissertation “Semiotics, Pragmatics, and Metaphor in Film Music Analysis” is under review for publication. He regularly presents papers on film music analysis; recent conference papers were included at the College Music Society (Salt Lake City 2007), Sound, Music and the Moving Image (London 2007), Electroacoustic Music Society (Leicester 2007), The Semiotic Society of America (New Orleans 2007), The Symposium of Research in Music Theory (Indiana 2006), and Music Theory Southeast (Miami 2005).In addition to his compositional and music-theoretical endeavors, he is an active piano performer and teacher.

While studying piano performance in The Netherlands under Herman Uhlhorn and David Kuyken, he participated in Master Classes with Michel Beroff, Ivan Moravec, and Paul Badura-Skoda. He performed extensively in Europe and Latin America. Juan’s piano students have won numerous national and international competitions: Cypress College Piano Competition, Southwestern Youth Music Festival, Music Teacher’s Association of California Concerto Competition, Virginia Waring International Competition, and Alice Kitchen Scholarship Competition.
