Film Music Opportunities
Zach Brock has been described by critically acclaimed trumpeter, educator, and composer Orbert Davis as "not just a violinist who plays jazz, but a jazz musician who happens to play the violin." Zach's artistry, both as a performer and composer, places him in the company of today's leading young jazz innovators.

Born in Lexington, Kentucky, Zach grew up in a family of musicians. Performing at a young age with his parents led to an early passion for improvisation. Zach moved to Chicago in 1992 to continue classical training with Myron Kartman at Northwestern University, and access to Chicago's thriving culture allowed him opportunities to study with local and touring jazz masters. After an appearance with Orbert Davis at the 1997 IAJE convention, Zach began to perform more frequently around the Chicago area. He worked for several years with Spazztet, a group of young musicians whose repertoire was rooted in self-composed material. For Zach, this was a departure from his background rooted in jazz and American-songbook standards. This collaboration would ultimately set the stage for Zach to start his own band in 2001, and to begin searching for his own voice as a leader.

In 2002, Zach was chosen to participate in Betty Carter's Jazz Ahead residency at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., which focuses solely on the development of its participant's own compositions. During this residency, Zach met keyboardist Sam Barsh and bassist Matt Wigton. They convened in Chicago later that summer and, with local drummer Nori Tanaka, recorded Zach's debut CD, Zach Brock and The Coffee Achievers. This self-produced CD created a stir in both the jazz and college markets, and The Coffee Achievers began touring in support of their effort.

Between projects with The Coffee Achievers, Zach formed a quartet in Chicago with pianist Jordan Baskin, bassist Matt Ulery, and drummer Jon Deitemyer. Zach also began to perform regularly with local guitar legend John McLean and vocalist Grazyna Auguscik, and in 2003, co-led a Quintet with saxophonist Rob Scheps whom he met at the Banff Centre for the Performing Arts in Canada.

Zach released his second CD, Chemistry, in February 2005 as part of a triple CD- release concert that included the John McLean Septet and Grazyna Auguscik. This local collaboration received the distinction of being the debut jazz concert of Chicago's new Millennium Park. In April 2005, Dave Douglas invited Zach Brock and The Coffee Achievers to a prestigious small-group residency sponsored by the Weill Music Institute that culminated in their first performance at New York's legendary Carnegie Hall.

Since then, The Coffee Achievers, along with new drummer Jon Deitemyer, have continued to tour the country in support of Chemistry. In May, Delmark Records released a collaboration between Zach and Chicago Symphony Orchestra violist Tom Wright entitled High Voltage. After listing him in the "Rising Stars" column of the Critics Poll, Down Beat Magazine featured Zach in the "Players" column of its October 2005 issue.

Zach is scheduled to appear at IAJE 2006 as a panelist for "Ask The Experts" where he will speak about his experiences as an independent jazz recording artist and producer. Looking forward to 2006 and beyond, Zach Brock and The Coffee Achievers are scheduled to appear at the Ouro Preto Jazz Festival in Minas Gerais, Brazil and are currently planning their next tour and recording.
