The music of CJ Villa generally falls into one of two classes:
The first class comprises instrumental tunes, usually a combination of keyboard and guitar, again usually up-tempo and 3 to 8 minutes in length. For example, the song clips on this site include:
- Waipio, which is a 3-part composition about a long hike in Hawaii (the clip is just the first section). Instruments include soprano sax, synthesizers, and percussion. The first section is mellow, the second brooding, and the third uplifting, corresponding generally to the sequence of feelings you might experience on a long, challenging trek.
- Jalapenos 'n Poi, which combines a driving Latin-influenced beat with an ethereal space motif on top. The way this composition builds, it is excellent to propel any action, adventure, crime, war or drama segment. Of course its space motif works well in scifi or mystery.
- The Rain Cloud of Kona is a four-part piano-based composition which begins with a moody them, progresses to a brief blues interval, builds to a crashing climax and ends with a lilting finale. The clip contains the first section. Ideal for religion, art, drama, some types of adventure, perhaps even a spy film "agent out in the cold" segment.
The second class comprises vocal songs, rock/pop/jazz based, with recent forays into country styles. These songs are generally up-tempo and 3 to 5 minutes in length. For example, CJ's three most recent songs are:
- a slow-tempo inspirational rock ballad
- a fast tempo rock/jazz song with country influences, a bit like a countrified Steely Dan
- an up-tempo country song that is a whimsical look at a long love affair

"Waipio" is excellent for any adventure or outdoor sequence.
"Jalapenos 'n Poi" is excellent to propel any action, adventure, crime, war or drama segment.
"The Way", the slow-tempo inspirational balld, would work in any resolution scene: for example, two people who have had differences are reconciling.
"Brand Ol' Me", the country/jazz/rock song, would work in a personal-renewal scene: for example, someone who just has come through a personal crisis and is now resolving to be different.
"Tell Me Again", the country song, is perfect for any sort of romantic comedy where one person is questioning why he/she is involved with the other but of course we know in the end they will stay together because after all it IS a comedy.
