The new CD from Sturgis Nikides, "Man Of Steel" is a rich tapestry of National Steel guitars, foreboding lyrics and dark images. The arrangements feature an intense mesh of electric, acoustic and steel slide guitars, bass and keys, and the production is clear and resonant, with the percussion a real feature. The guitar playing (of course!) is top-drawer stuff - plenty of emotion and some unexpected melodic turns that are very striking. If Ronnie Wood ever leaves the Stones they'll know where to look for a replacement. There is a 'slow-burn' feel to many of the tracks (particularly "Comes Again", "Dusted" and "She's Got a Gun") and the authentic stamp of dark, lonesome blues. Vocally, Nikides is reminiscent of a kind of JJ Cale standing at the gates of hell, which really suits the lyrical themes of melancholy and escape. It's like looking forward to an evening's brandy after the day is done. I kept "hearing" the whole thing in terms of a song cycle. The collection of songs all seems to be threaded together; like a walking tour of a ghost town with the steel guitar as the narrative voice. There's quite a cinematic feel to it. The songs are all nicely constructed and natural and the two instrumentals, "Stanton Street" and "Steelin' Home", would make great film music.
