Zachary J. Mechlem is a solo artist, a member of World Fusion trio Mohenjo Daro, and the front man for Alt-Western band Mack West. His formal training is in classical upright bass but is self-taught on guitar, drums, and percussion. Mechlem’s first solo CD release was The Haight Gang in 2000. An “East meets West” Wild West concept record that combines World Music with Country and Rock.
Mechlem began at the age of five studying piano. His exposure to World Music began just prior to that when his mother was a professional belly dancer and he was introduced to the music of the Middle East and North Africa.
After studying classical and jazz music at the School for Creative and Performing Arts, Mechlem began to experiment with other forms of music like rock, blues, and world. Since then he has spent many years writing and recording original music as a singer/songwriter and an instrumentalist, focusing on soundtrack music and instrumental World music. His track "Dakota" won him the grand prize in Shure Microphone Company’s 2002 “Shure Music Roots” songwriting contest. Mechlem was awarded five thousand dollars in Shure Microphones and other gear and was flown to Anaheim, CA to receive his award onstage at the House of Blues.
Sameera; Modern Music for Belly Dance is a raw and dynamic collection of original belly dance music inspired by trance, tribal, and gypsy music of North Africa & The Middle East.
Currently Mechlem is performing and recording with his band, Mack West, doing what he calls "Alternative Western"; a mix of original country, western and southwestern instrumentals.
His music has been featured on NBC Sports, History Channel, Discovery Channel, Travel Channel, AMC, and National Geographic.
