Since his arrival in Los Angeles in 1999, Shin Kawasaki has been performing and recording as a guitarist with the likes of Chili Charles (dr/ ex. Mike Oldfield, Lowell George, Brian Wilson, Ben Harper etc.), Misha Segal (Emmy-winning composer/pianist) and Visiting Violette — with whom he recorded their first full-length CD “a hero’s day” which was produced by Derek Nakamoto of Hiroshima and Keiko Matsui fame.
In addition, Kawasaki composes and produces music for various media outlets including film and television. Among his accomplishments include, “The Day You Shine,” a twenty minute promotional video produced for Lakeland College in Tokyo and the video won the Telly Awards in 2002. Kawasaki’s music can be heard in television commercials for Fancl Cosmetics, the Hong Kong Tourism Board, KDDI America, Japan Airlines, NHK Enterprise and Japan Air Force to name a few. His music was also featured at The Turkey Shoot Music Festival 2003 which took place at historical Egyptian Theater in Hollywood.
On top of the list of Kawasaki’s current projects sits Los Desnudos, Psychedelic/Jazz/Electronica/Punk/Experimental outfit, whose 1st album “Nude Awakening” is the finalist at 2008 Independent Music Awards. (Jam Category) He is currently mixing the 2nd album to be released in the summer of ‘08, which they refer to as “el sondido del futuro (the sound of the future).” He is also performing live and in production of their 1st EP with Jean Paul Yamamoto, an Electro Pop experimentation of a visual artist/fashion designer Lun*na Menoh, with drummer Alan Myers of DEVO fame. He is also leading the Jazz/R&B outfit Lunar Unit that features some of the best local musicians in LA, exploring and reconstructing the classics of Stevie Wonder, Miles Davis, Donny Hathaway, Herbie Hancock and more. Lunar Unit provides the look at danceable and accesible side of Jazz, a true-american artform that now seems to have been lost in the eyes of media and public.
Last but not least, Kawasaki has been exploring his capacity to be his own orchestra in his solo act which he sometimes refers to as “Shinkawasaki 3.0.” Largely improvised on the spot, he utilizes his loop machine to record his voice/guitar, play them back, and add melodic/rhythmic textures on top to create a massive soundscape. He is currently in the process of compiling his 1st solo album that showcases many aspects of his musical imagination, including the excerpts from his solo live performance, compositions originally meant for soundtracks and “the things that did not fit any other style except my own.”
He hosts an “Eclectic Open Jam” at historic Grand Star Jazz Club in Chinatown on 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of every month called MidTones, where he gathers musicians, DJs, MCs and beatmakers from different backgrounds and create something on the spot, in the spirit of famous Miles Davis quote “Play what you DON’T know” - and at the same time they keep the groove steady to make it danceable. those who are interested in participating should contact SK.
