Although he has been an artist since he could pick up a pencil, M. Raetzel took a keen interest in music in his early teenage years, when he bought his first drumset. "It's kind of funny how my involvement in music came to be," Matt recalls. "I was actually very interested in techno and electronica at the time, and was too naive to know that techno drums were all sampled. So I bought a drumset to learn techno, only to discover all of the other beautiful genres of music out there after I started taking drum lessons."
Since then, Matt has played in numerous rock and heavy metal bands, studied various genres of music, and eventually taught himself other instruments, such as guitar, piano, and bass guitar, violin, and cello. "How I see it, learning anything new in music is always going to benefit you somehow in the near future, whether it's learning a new instrument, studying a new style of music, or just experimenting in general," Matt says. "So why not learn all you can? Knowledge is the path to innovation."
In 2006, due to lack of funds to record his band's music in a professional studio, Matt decided to take matters into his own hands and invest in the creation of a small recording studio. This eventually led to a career producing local bands and artists. His passion for technology led to the purchase of virtual instruments and synthesizers, which allowed him to compose music beyond his dreams, and add an extra touch of beauty to the recordings of the bands he produced. "I became so intrigued with the idea of creating a full orchestral piece in the comfort of my bedroom that I thought to myself, 'Why don't I start focusing on writing music for production companies in film, television, and video games?' I love to write and record music, and I absolutely love the entertainment industry, this is where I need to be."
In 2008, Matt took on his first composing job writing a song for a comedy short with local troupe These People Comedy. Since then, he has scored and written original songs for thirteen comedy shorts with the company, written theme songs and scores for two television pilots, and composed theme music for a feature film. The opportunities that lie ahead for him in the near future remain a mystery...
