LowHigh is an alt-country/dark americana band that sprung forth from Nashville, TN with a mission to establish a new ethos in rock music. One where the song is the true frontman in the band, providing direction, both creatively and technically, to support the intensity and the mood of the lyrics and surrounding melodic arrangements.
In the late fall of 2008, LowHigh independently released their debut LP If It Comes Back To You. The six month recording process was an end to nearly two years of songwriting for the band, and the resulting collection is eclectic. From the regretful opening confession in “Let It Go” to the desperate heartbroken closer “Not A Day Goes By,” it is evident that all of LowHigh’s songs, in essence, are stories. They contain characters, settings, narrative prose, dialog, and plot. Ultimately, interpretation is left to the listener, and LowHigh creates accordingly, allowing the songs to remain flexible enough that they can find their way into anyone’s life.
Stephen Berger, a singer from New Orleans, and Andy Gasparini, a producer from the midwest, formed LowHigh in 2006 after working together on their individual projects. The separate albums naturally converged and became 2007’s Songs For Little Witches. The response generated from the EP’s online release was positive, garnering the formation of a proper band. Matt Arseneau, a local professional bass player, heard the songs and was quick to join the band after spending years in the Nashville live circuit.
In order to properly support the musical diversity of If It Comes Back To You, LowHigh plays two kinds of shows: the first being a traditional, full band-driven approach, while the second is a more intimate acoustic display. LowHigh’s influences combine a Bruce Springsteen/Tom Waits kind of storytelling with the energy of Ryan Adams, to deliver Elvis Costello-esque pop sensibility over Beatles inspired song structures.
