The range of my music is from Ambient Pop through alternative MOR to Avant garde.
It's hard to create something that's not intrusive, but complementary, not absent, but subliminal – But that's what i aim for. If the music suggests itself straightaway, then it's probably wrong, or at best adequate. I try to look for the less obvious, mainly because i am often annoyed or irritated by mismatched (or library music) soundtracks. The craft, as i understand, is not to illustrate what's already on screen, but to find a complimentary dimension. The filmaker/producer will usually have an intuition for this and, depending on the brief, I endevour to interprete their vision as well as my own.
I have been composing for many years and originally led a syth project (electro punk) in the 80s called the Contrived Titles Band. One of these pieces was re-recorded and used in a major car commercial three years ago. My grandfather was a stuntman in the early years of british film at Elstree and Douglas Fairbanks taught my father how to ride a bike.
