ABOUT MARK UNTHANK
Mark Unthank is a composer and record producer. He earned a Bachelor’s of Art Degree in Music and Economics from Emory University and has been a professional composer and producer since 1993. Mark was raised in a musical family in Wilmington Delaware. His mother, Frances and brother Larry are popular musicians and performers in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Mark played violin and trumpet as well as sang in choirs as a child and became passionate about writing original music as a teenager when he formed his first pop band at age 16.
Mark continued playing and writing contemporary music while formally studying music at Emory University. It was during his college years he began honing his skills for combining musical genres to make unique creations. Being well versed in many styles of popular and classical music has allowed Mark to compose music for clients as diverse as Lincoln Center, to some of today’s most popular recording artists. It’s also this talent for bridging different worlds of music and even cultures that gave him his nickname, CoolNerd. Mark found that to some people, he was the coolest person they’d met and to others, he was pretty nerdy. Called a “cool nerd” by a recording artist in the late 90’s, Mark embraced the term and uses it as a metaphor in blending genres of music and making it all make sense to the ear, heart and mind.
