It’s been an exciting year already for Alexandria Maillot- she is currently featured on Oprah Winfrey's website as part of "Oprah's Search for the World's Smartest and Most Talented Kids." A video of Alex performing one of her original songs along with her biography are posted at oprah.com Earlier this year, Alexandria was awarded the second place prize in the BC Musician Magazine's songwriting contest. She had previously won several other talent contests here in British Columbia including the PNE Star Discovery Talent Showcase (kids division winner 2004), the Vancouver Island Exhibition Song Bird Contest (overall winner 2006) and the Victoria Idol (overall winner 2006). Alexandria had already developed a wealth of experience from performing opportunities that have included appearances at the Nile Song Festival in Egypt, the Golden Star International Song Contest in Romania and the Merritt Mountain and Vancouver Island music festivals. A highlight for Alexandria was being invited by David Foster to perform in Toronto with Jann Arden for "A World of Possibilities". This concert was broadcast by the A Channel and marked the opening of the Michael Lee Chin wing of the Royal Ontario Museum. For the past two years Alexandria has been working hard to expand her resume to include songwriting. "It was hard, to say the least," says Alex, "I really had to focus my efforts and learn how to break through the barrier. I definitely have a great amount of respect for songwriters." Her efforts have already begun to pay off. "Revolution", which she co-wrote with producer Joby Baker and her sister Amanda Maillot, was picked by Universal Music in Europe and appears on the debut album by Swiss recording artist Stefanie Heinzmann. The song was the third single (with an accompanying video) from Stefanie's album "Masterplan", which went gold in Germany and Switzerland and was Top 10 in the EU. This summer Alexandria is very excited to be performing with her new band. They have already appeared at the Port Theatre in Nanaimo and will be performing at the Nanaimo Marine Festival and the Vancouver Island Music Business Conference in the coming months. Gandhi once said, "Be the change you want to see in the world." With perpetual striving, sheer determination and an open heart, this is what Alexandria wishes to accomplish through her passion for the arts.
